I O I O I is Cristiana F solo project since 2003.
By devoting all her life to the impossible investigation of the mystery, the italian outsider, bordeline composer and improviser I O I O I let the music pointing to the Source by the means of its own Sonic tension. Since 2003 she has been performing here and there in Europe, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, China and Russia and she occasionally published limited edition works here and there around the world, without any market considerations. Her set is mostly focused on guitar which is explored through spectral approach, electroacustic noise attitude and ethnical suggestions. I O I O I 's guitar is caressed as a meeting of strings, metals and woods, as a possibility for acousmatic openings and personal paths for resonance and expression.

This live work -between spectral improvisation and abstract composition- ideally would love to take forward W. Kandinsky's questions and struggle for arts and spirituality just before the first World War (Composition VII, 1913).
Live electric guitar, basic pedals, objects, bow, tape. *manipulated voice sample from G.Scelsi "Canti del Capricorno"

‘Im Merzbau’ contains four tracks revolving around Felix Gebhard’s hometown of Hannover, Germany and the art of Kurt Schwitters – one of that cities’ most famous sons. As a tribute to Schwitters all four tracks are collages, often improvised on the spot, then carefully edited into their final forms.

Analog Path bring us this CD from composer/musician Dave Seidel aka Mysterybear. He attended Simon’s Rock College from 1974 to 1978 where he was the first person to receive a BA from that school with a Major in Music Theory and Composition, and after playing in a number of experimental and avant garde projects he is now making music purely from non modular analog electronic instruments. ‘Oscillation’ is two pieces of monotone synth noise. Track one is a single synth buzz for a solid 35 minutes long, pretty hard stuff to take in really but very interesting all the same. Track two, entitled ‘Transpiration’, has a little more variation though as the buzz fades in and out with a slightly different tone. This is purely for the hardcore aficionado of electronic music and not just for the casual ambient listener! - Norman Records

Layers of shifting, shimmering synths are joined by echoed, unintelligible vocal loops; industrial drones give way to gentle tropical guitar...it’s all rather gentle and patient and sleepily detailed stuff. I have had a hard time reviewing it because Phil kept resetting the internet router, so this write-up has ended up rather brief but I listened to the whole thing and it was most pleasant. - Norman Records

Our Kim has just walked over to me to tell me she thinks this is brilliant, “Like sad clown music”. She has however declined to review it so that’s left to me. Basically what we have here are a number of piano loops that sound like they’re occasionally warping and melting. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s all very simple yet effective – reminding Phil of something between Les Dawson and The Caretaker. - Norman Records

“Place & Distance” is an album of raw fragments. Carefully prepared and recorded, it’s orchestrated in a way that disguises that this is actually an album of live electronics and improvisation. It is a work of sensitivity, varied and organic. Listening, one feels that much terrain was traversed in the process, and, yet, upon arriving, it’s as though the sounds have always existed. It is an album of traumatic surprise, in which sounds gather only to quickly, and sometimes violently, break up. There’s an irony in the way in which acoustic sound is dealt with so forcefully and abstractly. This is an album of multiple selves, as though many are improvising all at once, resulting in a kind of "Zen dialogue" between Yantis and the listener.

Flowers is made up of two tracks nearly 23 minutes in length that focus almost entirely on the beats created between conflicting frequencies. So when acoustic guitar is revealed as the primary instrument on “Flowers” no one would fault you for questioning the truth of that claim. In fact, the only moments anything acoustic is even audible is in the split second pings and plucks before long, sonorous tones are unfurled that rise and fall in intensity and dissonance. The sound that is created lies somewhere between coiling feedback and the purity of sine waves as Shinobu Nemoto pares his instrument back to a resonant hum that is simple, but endlessly complex. – Ryan Potts

Guitar, electronics, reel to reel & cassette tape loops, mic’d surface, found objects and radio waves. Recorded in Frorida, summer 2012. A personal lament for a country that thrives on the tragedy and sickness inherent in modern U.S. television programming.
I can’t find any info out about this dude anywhere. I’m guessing he’s American as this was recorded in Florida and it’s a personal lament about US TV being a bit shit. I guess if he was from anywhere else in the world then he wouldn’t care. I do like Breaking Bad though!
Telly aside we have four tracks of guitar, electronics, reel to reel and cassette tape loops, found objects and radio waves creating a hazy electro acoustic world of dreamlike states. It’s lovely as well. I never really know what to write about things like this. I either like them or I don’t and this one I happen to like. It sounds personal and it’s got that warmth which I think is necessary for a release like this to stand out above the plethora of similar releases that are churned out. I’m enjoying the radio wave distortion and crackles and pops over the drifting dreamlike audio. Limited to 100 copies or something like that on Analog Path in one of those brown cardboard arigato packs. - Norman Records

The Late Surge of Gold is the work of British sound designer Harry Towell, under his Spheruleus moniker. Previous releases have graced labels such as Hibernate, Home Normal and Time Released Sound and collaborations that have seen him work with the likes of Pleq and Ekca Liena. Harry also runs the Audio Gourmet netlabel and its new sister label Tessellate Recordings, which specialises in limited edition CDr releases. The Late Surge of Gold was composed specifically for Analogpath, recorded during last year’s Indian Summer in the UK, a phenomenon in
which the sun shines deep into autumn. This is an album which documents warm and hazy summer, the bright sunshine that extends through autumn before eventually descending into the cold of winter.
The sounds are a typical example of Spheruleus’ work, pooling together fragile acoustic recordings from the artist’s instrument collection. They are joined by field recordings, static and subtle drones which amount to a lo-fi pastoral tale, unfolding the full spectrum of seasonal colours from the warmth of yellow and orange, fading slowly to grey and darkness.
Artwork by Johan Söderberg, except from the image which features a building. This was taken by Harry Towell on holiday in the Peak District at the height of the Indian Summer.

Cassette Recordings was recorded with little planning or fuss, the process involving Margraff making use of a Fender Jazzmaster and a selection of effects pedals which were then directed into a 4 track cassette recorder. Cassette Recordings seems to benefit from the unique texture which only lo-fi magnetic cassette tape can accurately reproduce and this approach, added to the unfussy naming of tracks by the date in which they were created and the simple packaging courtesy of Analogpath, all serves to create the impression of an unpretentious musician confident in his ability to produce music which stands on its own merit.
The album’s six tracks are dated between 10th August – 26th November 2011 and from the opening number there are echo’s of Margraff’s work in Two People In A Room, with a more overtly bleak and distortion-heavy feel to the music when compared to the relatively cleaner tones of Sleeping Pills. Despite the similar style and tempo of the material within Cassette Recordings and the way in which each track seems to blend into the next, the effect is not at all dulling and this author would be happy to listen to endless hours of the same slow exploration of Margraff’s fretboard without ever growing tired of it.
Cassette Recordings is a fine example of what a talented artist can produce when limited to barebones recording techniques in order to highlight that which matters most of all, the music itself. – Adam Williams

I don’t know much of anything about Stray Ghost, but I’m pretty sure they’re from the UK and I know that they make quite lovely ambient drones. Airy tones shift slowly and are augmented by sterling piano loops, drawing everything out to its furthest point. At times its reminiscent of Celer and others in that vein, all the while finding new elements to turn this into something very much its own. Subterranean electronic rumblings latch on while pastoral guitars sing on the surface. This dichotomy does wonders for Stray Ghost’s sonic palette, keeping the album from being a one note affair. This is lovely, confident ambient music, perfect for these hot summer afternoons. – Brad Ros

Mr Grainger is the lord of all things ambient or melodic electronica. That’s his shctick and his releases go one way or the other and this goes the more ambient droney path. Organ, guitar, synth, FX devices and multi-track tape are utilized to make lovely fluffy walls of intense drone to sooth your life battered mind. It’s bleaker than some of his other releases which tend to have a certain warmth about ‘em. This one doesn’t and that’s replaced by odd sound effects cropping up here and there. But then reading the press release the concept is a reasonably bleak one about an abandoned ship and a missing crew. Now I wanna know what happens… I’m thinking aliens came aboard the ship via one crew member who ingested one and then it bursts out of his stomach and grows into a 7 foot basketball player sized alien which picks the rest of the crew off one by one. Ooh I’ve got an idea for a fillum… - Norman Records

Here we have an epic fifty-one minute bliss out from Celer on this limited edition of 150 copies. In many ways it feels like a travelogue created with field recordings, some of which have little to no post production whereas others are more heavily processed and mutate into Celer’s trademark therapeutic multi-faceted drones. Who knows what locations within Jakarta and Indonesia these recordings took place. Remote temples? Busy streets? The lack of explanation from the label only adds to the mysterious quality of the releases and just emphasises the importance of the sounds. I particularly like the recording of a person laughing at around twenty eight minutes which precedes a heavy wall of gaseous ambient sound which gradually floods the soundfield. Recommended. - Norman Records

The tape drones of Shinobu Nemoto are darker than on his previous releases, guitar lines are more obscured, drowned in murkiness and hiss. The Deadly Sins feels like a study in aural grayscale drones. Of course you can still identify this as guitar ambient. But some things have changed in Summons of Shining Ruins’ vocabulary: Nemoto uses less fuzz on this release and the tracks develop slower but more steadily, the guitar drone crescendo cliché of starting at low volume and developing a wall of sound cannot be heard at all. It is also refreshing that The Deadly Sins features eleven tracks in one hour and only one of them is longer than seven minutes. The sounds are as diverse as the nature of the sins that were set to music: from the brittle “Envy” to the bittersweet “Greed” which could also be called “Cocteau Twins Peak”… If you prefer Thomas Köner, William Basinski and Main over this year’s hot new laptop guitar drone act, then this release is for you. I urge you to check out everything else Mr. Nemoto has done before, too. You’ll hear that Summons of Shining Ruins does not rely on gimmicks or digital processing and prefers to keep his signal chain analog or as he calls it himself “post-binary”. To me, this does not  matter but it surely adds to the depth of the material that is presented here. The Deadly Sins sounds like tape heaven. This is really worth it! See you in hell. - René Margraff
